7 Festive Yarn Advent Calendar Knit and Crochet Patterns for the Festive Period
“What do I make with a yarn advent calendar?”
If like me, you love buying and opening yarn advent calendars but don’t really need more than one multi coloured shawl, then you are probably searching the internet high and low for some alternatives. Well, let me helps you out and share some of my favourite advent patterns available on Ravelry. I’ve picked out patterns that specifically use advent minis, but of course you can always get creative with other patterns.
Advent Wrap by hirismakes (aka ME!)
It just so happens that this yarn advent calendar conundrum inspired me to design the advent wrap back in 2020, and of course I had to include it here. I wanted to design something with vertical colours striped rather than the typical not some flatter horizontal bands of colour, and what I came up with is this rectangular “wrap” thing, it’s like a loose throw over cardigan and in the colourway that I used it makes a perfect summer cover up at the beach! Which is about right in terms of how long it takes to knit up and entire 4ply / fingering weight advent calendar of yarn! It comes in a few different size options, it’s written for 20g minis, but the for the smallest size you can even get away with 10g minis or use larger skeins and mix it up a bit.
Schiehallion Point Pullover by relish.life – crochet pattern
If you’re thinking great, but I’m a crocheter, then this one’s for you. Designed by a friend of mine alongside the advent wrap back in 2020.
My Favorite Adventure by Dragon Hoard Designs
Although I have not knit this pattern myself, I really appreciate the level of detail in the Ravelry description and the fact this pattern is designed for a large range of sizes. Even though the yarns are used in a top-down raglan the colour work element means that the garment isn’t too stripey. There’s lots of finished projects for you to nosey through and to decide in which order you want your yarns. However, you do need an extra ‘main colour’ which may put some people off as it’s yet more yarn to buy!
Hearten Mitts by Helen Stewart
If you’ve got a load of minis left over, or you just can’t face such a big project then I really like these simple fingerless gloves!
Advent Socks 2022 by Natalie Sheldon
Sticking with the smaller projects, these socks look super fun, not for the faint hearted when it comes to stranded colourwork, but will certainly keep you busy over the advent season!
Full of Minis Hat by Barbara Nalewko
This hat has a super interesting construction and looks super cosy and warm when it’s done. What I love about this one is that it uses all 24 colours, but only 5g of each, so possibly a solution to the left-over bits from other advent projects!
Anthology Throw by Helen Stewart
I have no idea exactly what you are supposed to do with this circular throw/blanket/shawl? … but it is gorgeous! If you really want to show off your yarn advent and have a colourful style, maybe this will make a nice decorative throw for your sofa or guest bed.
See you next time!
